5 GHz wifi is a frequency upon which wifi can broadcast in your home. It allows fast network connection, so it’s great for fast data transmission and high bandwidth applications like video streaming and gaming.

However, the 5 GHz wifi works best when no obstacles are in between the user and the gateway. 5 GHz doesn’t penetrate through solid objects like walls. If you are in a different room and the 5 GHz wifi is in another room so you may have limited access. 5 GHz wifi has a short-range, but it is fast.

Gadgets 5 GHz wifi connects to

To use 5 GHz wifi, your home or office wifi must have dual band wifi support.

Smartphones, smartwatches, smart TVs, tabs, and laptops connect easily. There is no limit to the number of devices that connect to the 5 GHz wifi.

How to connect your phone to the 5 GHz wifi?

The simple and easy guide to connect to 5 GHz wifi is given below:

  1. In your mobile settings, tap and turn on wifi.
  2. On the top side of the page, click on the 3 or 2 shown dots.
  3. A drop-down menu will appear. In that, select advanced options.
  4. Select the frequency band.
  5. Select 5 GHz here
  6. That’s it! You are connected to 5 GHz wifi.

How to connect the 5 GHz wifi to the laptop?

Many people think connecting to 5 GHz wifi is tough but here is what you have to do to connect to the 5 GHz wifi which is quite simple.

  1. Right click onto the adapter in device manager.
  2. Click on properties section
  3. And then switch to the advance tab
  4. Properties list appear which shows 5 GHz.

802.11ac adapter supports 5 GHz. 802.11n also supports the 5 GHz.

Dangers of using 5 GHz wifi

Wifi of every kind does emit EMF radiations. This radiation can be hazardous for the body if the body is exposed to it for long hours.

Many people think 5 GHz wifi is dangerous for health, causes ionization in the body, and is cancer-causing. But this mainly depends on how close you are to the 5 GHz wifi emitting router and the devices you are using.

The frequency required for ionization is at least 1,000,000 GHz. This has 500,000 times higher frequency than that of 5 GHz wifi frequency. So 5 GHz wifi falls under non-ionization radiation. But this definitely doesn’t mean that it’s not harmful.

Comparison of 5 GHz wifi and 2.4 GHz wifi

The main difference between 5 GHz wifi and 2.4 GHz wifi are range and bandwidth.

5 GHz wifi is faster than 2.4 GHz wifi. The speed of 2.4 GHz wifi becomes slow as multiple devices are connected at one time, whereas; 5 GHz wifis speed remains unaffected despite the number of device connections.

However, 5 GHz wifi provides fast data in close range. But 2.4 GHz wifi works at greater ranges but may perform at a slower speed.

Does the battery drain quickly if your phone or laptop is connected to 5 GHz wifi?

Well battery life depends on how much you use your device. If you download heavy files, watch videos and chose to do live streaming so the battery is likely to drain quickly.

But the 5 GHz wifi connection is fast so less time is consumed in downloading data and streaming so you might be able to save onto your battery as compared to the device connected to 2.4 GHz wifi, this will work slower and consume more battery.

Final thought!

Both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz have pros and cons.

For fast data transfer and if you don’t want to compromise on the speed then 5 GHz wifi  is a great choice.

You can always switch to either wifis if you have a dual router but using 5 GHz wifi is a better option.
